Human Biology Resources

This page contains a list of equipment and facilities available within Human Biology as well as electronic resources for staff and students.

Equipment and Facilities

The Human Biology Discipline has ample resources for the areas of microbiology, genetics, histology and biochemistry. Human Biology supply sufficient equipment so that students are able to work at their own pace, without the hassle of sharing. For microbiology, a range of equipment for the isolation, purification and identification of microbiological organisms is available. Equipment for the extraction, purification and amplification of DNA is also available: the School has PCR machines, electrophoresis apparatus (agarose and fluorescent and radio-isotope polyacrylamide equipment), fluorescent microscopes and digital imaging apparatus. For post graduate students, the facilities at the Research Centre are available for use on genetic-oriented postgraduate projects. Human Biology maintains a fully equipped Histology laboratory, with automatic tissue processing facilities for wax and plastic embedding as well as facilities for microtomy, ultramicrotomy and cryosectioning. Finally, the modern analytical techniques and equipment necessary for biochemical investigation, such as spectrophotometers, are also available in Human Biology.
