Physiotherapy

An Overview

Physiotherapy is the application by physiotherapists of knowledge, assessment skills, treatment plans (including manual skills, education and advice), and review, to maximise physical function and well being for individuals or groups.

Physiotherapists work in preventative health care as well as in restoration of movement and function following pain, disease or trauma. Physiotherapists work with individuals with disability to maximise functional independence, whether congenital or acquired.

Physiotherapists can assist people of all ages, from new-borns to those at the end of life.
Clinical Physiotherapists work for the health department in hospitals or community teams; in private practice; for nongovernment organisations; or connected with companies or sporting teams.

Physiotherapists may also provide consultancy advice on a range of health issues: teaching or research, and many physiotherapists do a combination of a number of these things.
